Search is excited to share that we have opened a new Adult Learning Program, our second in the Ignite model. The new site is located in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago. Our Ignite programs are community-based, small and flexible licensed day services programs designed to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities pursue and achieve their personal goals and actively participate in community life.
Ignite programs offer:
- Both full and part-time options available,
- Small group setting located in close proximity to parks, a library, and public transportation,
- Mix of classroom instruction, individual supports, and community-based experiences,
- Access to employment services and therapeutic supports,
- Access to technology and hands-on training to support its use.
The participants at the new site are very excited about the new program, as well. Search’s Program Development Coordinator, Amanda Bulgrin, and Patrick Hurst, the Ignite Norwood Park QIDP, took a moment to talk with participants who attend the Norwood program, to find out what they like most about the new site!
Q: What makes Ignite different from other programs?
A: The staff are great and we get more freedom and choices.
Q: What new skills are you learning at Ignite?
A: We are working on different skills that will help us be more independent: how to handle money, how to clean up after ourselves, how to make healthy choices and how to cope with stressful situations.
Q: What is your favorite part of the Ignite program?
A: Going on outings to new places, having free time to try new games and exploring the web. Also making new friends with new people! We didn’t know each other before and now we are good friends.
Q: What are some of the places you’ve visited in the community?
A: We’ve gone all over the Chicagoland area, including the Shedd Aquarium, Naperville Riverwalk, Woodfield Mall, Harlem Irving Plaza Mall, Dairy Queen, Walmart and Starbucks.
Q: How do you typically get to where you are going?
A: So far, we have only used a Search van on our outings. But we are excited to learn how to use public transportation in the near future!
Q: You’ve had a little bit of a chance to get out and explore the neighborhood. Where is your favorite place to go in Norwood Park so far?
A: Mo Dailey’s Pub and Grille, a restaurant near our program. They have the best nachos and cheese curds!
Q: What would you tell someone who is interested in attending the Ignite program?
A: They should come! If you come you’ll have so much fun and you’ll never want to leave.
