The Evanston YMCA was founded in 1885 to "promote mental, moral, physical and social welfare." We remain true to the spirit of that mission, but have expanded to serve everyone in our diverse community.

The Evanston YMCA was renamed the McGaw YMCA in 1984 in appreciation of a major gift from the Foster McGaw family. Our membership is over 10,000 and we serve an estimated 20,000 people each year across all our programs.

Recreational Facilities
In 1994, the Grimm Family Aquatic Center addition provided a 6-lane lap pool, whirlpool, multi-purpose rooms, and family locker rooms in addition to the existing 4-lane pool.

Our facility expanded again in July of 2002 with the completion of the Sebring-Lewis Center, which includes a 30,000 square foot gymnasium, an indoor running/walking track, and several multi-purpose rooms.

In 2003, we opened a new fitness center with over 50 cardio training machines, a 15-station strength training circuit, a comprehensive Hammer Strength free weight area and our new Group Exercise Studio.

In 2009, we purchased 29 new pieces of cardio equipment for our fitness center.

Other Facilities
In addition to our facility at 1000 Grove Street, the McGaw YMCA offers programs at three other sites: the McGaw YMCA Child Care Center at 1420 Maple Street, the Foster Reading Center at 2010 Dewey, and Camp Echo in Fremont, Michigan.

While our Y may look quite different from the one started in 1885, we share a vision with the YMCA of the past. Through supporting healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility, we strengthen the foundations of our community.

I liked the lounge area because the chairs were comfy. Danny was very helpful and very nice to me. I was hoping to become a renewed member at the YMCA, but I am not sure if Amanda and Nick would allow that to happen for us. The best part is that we have a break room where we eat lunch and use our leisure time wisely. I like to play basketball, use the treadmill, go swimming laps in the pool, speed walking on the track, take yoga & tai chi classes, use the hot tub next to the swimming pool, etc.
People were friendly and welcoming. That's great!

I've come here several times since my last review, with different people. This morning I met one of the new employees there, Mary. She got me going on a treadmill while my tutor Barry had to go do something else quick. Mary talked directly to me when assisting me, and did a very good job. This Y is fun!

Well i have to say that I love the YMCA because i work for them being a swim instructor teaching little preschool kids how to swim.

I enjoy my job and i can feel like i can feel good about my job.The Y makes me feel that i am appreciated, doing something good and being commented to a good job done and making parents feel good that we do a great job teaching their children.

The YMCA is a supper place to have a healthy life and to stay in great shape and a fun place to exercise, have a great time learning and reaching out to the world and make a difference in lives or in parents or kids and family.

The staff at the YMCA is a great team with the two bosses Megan,Jessica i recommend to others, being a team leader.

I was recently at the McGaw Y to do a disability-awareness training for the Y's Staff and Board, and was extremely impressed with their interest in becoming better informed about the needs of people with disabilities who use their Y and in providing excellent disability-aware customer service. The questions and issues that were raised reflected this strong interest, and I came away with new insight and a positive feeling about this exceptional Y with a long history of service in the Evanston and surrounding communities.

My experience with the McGaw YMCA has been wonderful. I have worked with a few different personal trainers there, and they have all been friendly, knowledgeable and dedicated. The people I have worked with knew how to accomodate my disability while still giving me an extremely effective workout every session. The building itself is somewhat difficult to navigate, however if you ask at the front desk, which you can get to via a ramp outside the main entrance, they can help you. There is also a completely accessible entrance leading to an elevator that will take you directly to the fitness center; it's off the alley, so not very pleasant, but if you press the buzzer they will let you in. The trainers and other staff can help you figure out the best way to use the equipment, whether you're getting personal training or not. The main obstacle that might keep you from using the Y's fitness center is the cost, but they do have a sliding scale for lower income clients.

I've been to this particular YMCA several times with Dave, my life-skills tutor at Center for Independent Futures, to work out on the exercise equipment. We've also gone swimming there. The facility is very nice and well maintained. In addition to going there with Dave, I was there one Wednesday evening for a leadership group. We did some fun activities together. I've also been there with a couple other people from CIF. Everyone at the Y is very friendly, and the disability awareness training is quite good.

I think the ymca is a very good place to excercise. The people there make me feel welcome, they are friendly, they give me choices, they are respectful of me while I'm excercising. They also are very flexible people and they even have a ramp, so the place is physically accessible for those with wheel chairs or strollers.
