Accessibility begins with an intention to be accessible. A case in point is The Northbrook Historical Society, a small nonprofit in a landmark building that has a lot of stairs. In speaking with the Society's long-time director Judy Hughes, I came to know that the Society has grappled with the accessibility issue, and two floors of the small history museum that the Society runs are accessible by ramp. Since the cost of making the 3rd floor accessible is prohibitive, the Society did create a video tour of the 3rd floor for visitors who are unable to get up to that floor. While we are all working toward full accessibility -- for people who use walkers and wheelchairs -- as well as for people who need other sorts of accommodations and adaptations due to disabilities that are not physical, it is important to acknowledge and celebrate businesses and organizations that have taken steps or are taking steps toward accessibility and inclusion...even if they still have a ways to go!
