Our son recently attended an open house at the Northbrook Fire Department, which has three state of the art stations. We are grateful to the Department for participating in special outreach to families who have children with disabilities, and for encouraging them to enroll their children in The Premise Alert Program, which enables law enforcement and fire/emergency personnel to be aware of special needs of residents with disabilities when they receive a call for help. There is a form on the Department's website that can be printed, completed, and returned to the Police Department so that pertinent information will be computerized so that in an emergency, the information will be readily accessible to law enforcement and fire/emergency personnel. The information could save your child's life.

While we have never needed to call upon the Fire Department for services (other than to visit our block party), we are grateful for their willingness to help us keep our children with disabilities safe through programs like The Premise Alert Program, and to ensure that firefighters are trained to take necessary precautions and adapt their procedures when they are dealing with individuals who are at elevated risk when out in the community, and especially during emergencies.
