Great!
Great!

I recently attended a disability-awareness training program by JJ's List for Library staff, and was really impressed by how eager the Deerfield Library staff is to learn about the needs of persons with disabilities in the library setting, and to strive toward meeting those needs. From using person-first language, to offering assistance when appropriate, from special programs geared toward children with disabilities to helping patrons be as independent as possible in the library, the Deerfield Library is on-board. What a great library!

I attended an event at this library a few weeks ago. All staff with whom I spoke were wonderful, and the place is physically accessible.

I attended an awards program today presented by NSSED (Northern Suburban Special Education District) honoring outstanding programs for students with disabilities. The Deerfield Public Library's Sensory Storytime program -- developed by Youth Librarian Renee Grassi, in collaboration with NSSED -- received a "Best Practice" award. Although this disability-aware program is geared toward younger children, it's an example of the disability-awareness of the Deerfield Public Library. Although we are not Deerfield residents, we have used the Deerfield Library on many occasions, and have found staff there to be welcoming and supportive, and believe that the Deerfield Library is playing a leadership role in disability-awareness among area public libraries.
