We are self-advocates with disabilities. We are speaking about
people with disabilities at Speak Up and Speak Out Summit in Springfield Illinois, today
November 5, 2013. We are here because we want to learn how to
speak out. We want to let people without disabilities know that we are the
same as they are. We are not helpless. Please treat us like everybody
else. If a person with a disability asks for help, please give it, but don’t
force your help on me. Be nice to all people. Go more slowly if you
need to. Sometimes I need things to slow down. We are not lazy. We
work twice as hard as others. We are people, we are not defined by
our disabilities. We want people to understand us but not underest-
mate us. Don’t kick and punch us. Don’t make fun of us.
Why? Because it’s our world too!!! And we have spending power. I
will go to businesses that respect me. Superpower all the way.
