Guest Blog: How I Landed My First Job

After I passed my second actuarial exam in December 2012, I spent two years struggling to find work in the field. I applied for over 100 jobs as an actuary or in related fields, only to receive a small handful of interviews. It made me start to wonder if I should start looking in other directions because I couldn’t find work in the actuarial field. I felt lost and in need of more direction.

I joined No Boundaries in October 2013. At No Boundaries I found my direction. For eight hours a week I worked on networking, my résumé and proper interviewing skills. After building a relationship with the No Boundaries staff, they began opening their networks to me. Through their networks, I was connected with the CEO and Chief Actuary at Guarantee Trust. It wasn’t long after the introductory email that I received a call from the head of Human Resources at Guarantee Trust asking for a phone interview.

I interviewed the next day with the head of human resources and the Chief Actuary. They asked me about my experience and background to determine what type of job would be the best fit for me. I must have made a good impression because they asked me to come in for a face-to-face interview the following week.

The interview was over 2 hours long and I talked to five different people, one from human resources and four actuaries. I was somewhat intimidated at first, but it ended up being a fairly relaxed interview, which I am told is a sign that they liked me.

On Tuesday evening December 23, I received a phone call from the head of human resources offering me a job with a start date of February 23.  I was very excited to accept the position! The highlight of Christmas Eve was telling my family about my new job. Everyone was very excited to hear the news!

I owe so much of my success to No Boundaries and JJsList.com!
